Resources
Websites we found invaluable while we were preparing for this adventure.
Sailnet
Sailnet is a highly active forum with loads of very knowledgeable users who go out of their way to spread info around. It also has a high percentage of internet whackjobs, pontificators, flame wars and wankers. Want an afternoon of fun and hijinks? Post a question on sailnet about which anchor you should buy. Then sit back and watch people go apeshit.
Cruisers Forum
Another sailing forum with loads of smart experienced sailors. This particular forum is geared to the cruising spectrum of sailing and a bit more mellow than Sailnet.
Three Sheets Northwest
Three Sheets Northwest is an online magazine for the sailing community in the Pacific Northwest.
Boat Friends
Other folks on boats that out there, doing it, and telling us about it.
s/v Gallant Fox
Marianne and Gary took off from Shilshole and are currently living aboard while voyaging about the Sea of Cortex in Mexico.
s/v Bella Star
Our friends, Aaron and Nicole, who are in the process of moving aboard their beautiful Hans Christian 33, s/v Bella Star.
s/v Sohcahtoa
Three guys from Seattle hopped on a boat and sailed it around the world. Their website is a hilarious account of their circumnavigation. Great reading.
s/v Sea Bungalow
Ken and Tammy purchased a Tartan 37 down in Texas and after a massive refit, are on their way to the Carribean.
s/v Stepping Stone
Elias, Sarah, Kimberly and Boo are leaving a swath of madcap adventures across the tropical waters of Mexico.
s/v Insegrevious
Scott is a fantastic writer that lives on his boat with his wife in Shilshole Marina, our old stomping grounds in Seattle.
s/v Bright Ayes
Wayne and Betty are cruising the world aboard their brilliantly outfitted Caliber 47. We did our first ocean passage aboard s/v Bright Ayes from the Bahamas to Virginia.
s/v Cape St. James
We lived on J-dock with Fran and Jim from s/v Cape St. James. Having already circumnavigated the globe once, they are now living aboard their Tartan 47 in Alaska catching salmon and dodging grizzly bears.
s/v Luckness
Another buddy from Shilshole Marina, Craig is currently outfitting his beautiful Pacific Seacraft 37 Luckness for a world tour.
s/v Deep Playa
Pea and Dawn are refitting their Pearson 424 for the margarita latitudes.
s/v Bint al Khamseen
Ken and Susan - who clearly have excellent taste in sailboats - having broken free of the gravitational pull of Shilshole Marina (no mean feat, trust me) and are plying tropical waters in their Caliber 40.
s/v Miss Me
Another friend of ours from Shilshole, Ben lives aboard his interestingly decorated Westsail 28.
s/v Madrigal
Justin and Jenny live aboard in Boston, Mass. I ran across their blog when I first started thinking about living aboard and have really enjoyed following their progression from liveaboards to aspiring world sailors.
